The renovation of this Tudor style home was a delight to be involved in. We began with the front entry transom and door and gave it a very classical feel by incorporating handcrafted lead casings with a simple diamond style to create a simply elegant entryway. We carried the simple Architectural theme throughout the house. We used Restoration glass, glass made to mirror glass from the late 1800’s, in a large diamond pattern in the den and an Old English crack-line theme in the kitchen.
A long time ago, in Merry Old England, an enterprising stained glass artist came up with a good idea! In some instances the stained glass artist would choose to repair a broken pane by adding a line of lead came to seal in the crack and avoid replacing the entire pane of glass. The style became popular and soon other craftsman began to build window with the crack-line theme. I thought the style added to the warmth of the kitchen and the overall Tudor style of the house.
The house also had an apartment over the garage. We continued with the diamond theme of the entryway to the French Doors of the apartment that lead to the garden. The garden was to be the focal point of the Tudor style apartment so the simple pattern allowed viewing into the garden. The sidelights are leaded in a tight, classical, diamond pattern. The Bay Widow set is the classical diamond pattern in Restoration Glass with several of the panes in a textured Baroque style glass to add a focal point. The adding of Baroque glass is also an Old English trick that added style to an otherwise simple pattern. In the small bathroom we used a pastel palette of cathedral glass to bring a little pizzazz to a small space.
